In the book Appalachian Trials (link below) it is suggested that you make a list explaining why you are hiking, what you will do when you finish, and what will happen if you don't. Below is my list explaining those such things, I hope it is acceptable.
I am thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail because...
- I want to figure out what I want out of life
- I want to put off the real world
- I want adventure
- I want to do something most people have not
- I'm sick of being comfortable
- Of the cool people I will hopefully meet
- I like being in the great outdoors
When I successfully thru-hike the Appalachian Trail I will...
- Be a man.
- Be ready to take on the world
- Have some nice legs
- Say I've hiked a continuous 2,180 miles
- Have conquered a great feat
- Feel accomplished
- Have a greater appreciation for the little things
If I give up on the Appalachian Trail I will...
- Hate myself for even attempting it
- Feel like I wont be able to accomplish anything
- Live with being like every other person who quit
- Punch a puppy
- Try again
